Authors purpose: Chris Kyle wrote "American Sniper" to tell his story about his time over seas and in the states, as well to show the effect that being a Navy Seal has on brotherhood, family, soldiers, and country. But the main purpose of Chris Kyle writing this book is to show what any combat vet has to go through not just a SEAL, what the spouses have to sacrifice and to honor those that were true heroes and who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Thesis: " I grew up in small towns where I learned the importance of family and traditional values, like patriotism, self-reliance, and watching out for your family and neighbors."
Evidence for thesis: "Protecting my brother was even better- if someone tried to pick on him, I'd lay them out...I had all sorts of motivation to keep me going. I remembered every person who told me I'd flunk out of BUD/S. Sticking in was the same as sticking it to them...When I saw him, I saw he was in pretty bad shape, gut shot. I dropped and got an arm under each of his, then stated hauling him." Chris Kyle show his self reliance through not giving up through BUD/S and every situation he gets into when he's in combat in Iraq. When he was younger he felt the need to protect, especially his brother and anybody who was getting picked on. He mostly sought it as a way to get into a fight without getting in trouble. During his time in Iraq he preformed many OP's in which showed acts of patriotism, such as helping his fellow service men in combat.
Quotes from the books that pertain his purpose: " I would lay down my life for my country... The newcomers are treated like hell until they prove they belong. New guys get the shit jobs. They're constantly tested. They're always beat on... We had a burglar alarm system, and for some reason, Taya set it off accidently when she came home. It scared the ever-living shit out of me. I dove under the desk. I thought it was a Scud attack... We laugh about it now- but for those few seconds I was truly scared, even more scared than I had been in Kuwait when the Scuds actually fly over." Chris Kyle's beliefs were God, Country, Family, but it is a close race between family and country. Family has been one of the main problems on being an active SEAL, the divorce rates are like 98% to 99%, so that creates problems on the family side of things. As well as getting used to the souroundings again, for example alarm systems and driving. He states in his book that his alarm system said that there was a burgaler in his house and it turned out to be that the system thought he was a burgalar; and that in Iraq there are really no laws for driving so he said that he had major road rage when he got back to the states. When Chris Kyle lost one of his fellow SEALs his SEAL team created a patch in his honor. Back to his family he states that since he was out on deployments for most of the time his children were going up, so they were not as attached to him as to his wife (Taya). He felt the constant need to serve his country, he felt that the government spend hundreds of thousands of tax dollars on him to become a hardcore killing machine that he should at least make it worth there money as well as the patriotism that comes by being in the service.
